In today's post, we'll look at the benefits of MCTs and MCT oil. We'll also introduce CocoTherapy TriPlex™ MCT-3 Oil and explain what makes it different from other MCT oils. Keep reading for the lowdown on the latest addition to the CocoTherapy line of products.
What Are Medium-Chain Triglycerides (MCTs)?
Medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) are a type of fat (lipid). All fats and oils are made of triglycerides, and there are many different types. Triglycerides are made of individual fat molecules called fatty acids (3 fatty acids make up a single triglyceride molecule).
Medium-chain triglyceride oils are comprised of 100% medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs), which are responsible for many health benefits.
To drill down further, coconut oil contains different types of medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs), each responsible for various health benefits, namely lauric acid, caprylic acid, and capric acid. Lauric acid is often considered the most beneficial of the MCFAs, and gives coconut oil its immune-supporting properties.
Virgin coconut oil contains about 63% medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs). Therapeutic-grade virgin coconut oil such as CocoTherapy coconut oil contains high levels of lauric acid – at least 53% (compared to 40% or less in grocery store brands).
When consumed, MCTs are rapidly broken down into individual medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs). Most of these MCFAs go directly to the liver where they can be used as an efficient fuel source or turned into ketones.
Ketones act as an alternative fuel to glucose – a much more potent and efficient fuel that's especially beneficial for brain health. And because the body can immediately use MCTs as a source of energy, they are less likely to be stored as fat.
MCTs actually help stimulate metabolism and control weight. They are also easily digested by the body and prevent strain on the gastrointestinal tract.
What Is MCT Oil?
MCT oil is a fractionated product that's usually made from coconut oil. Fractionation is a process in which the long-chain fatty acids are removed from the oil, leaving only the medium-chain fatty acids remaining.
When processed, most fractionated coconut oils have almost all of their lauric acid removed. But due to the way they're processed, they contain higher levels of capric acid and caprylic acid than other types of coconut oil.
The high levels of capric acid and caprylic acid in fractionated coconut oil (MCT oil) have been associated with a range of health benefits. In fact, MCT oil has also been used in hospitals since the 1950s and is thought to treat various conditions including malabsorption, epilepsy, and cystic fibrosis. It is also popular with athletes to manage weight and increase performance.
Why Is CocoTherapy Triplex™ Mct-3 Oil Different?
CocoTherapy TriPlex™ MCT-3 Oil is a unique blend of medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) oil, with higher levels of caprylic acid and capric acid, PLUS lauric acid.
Unlike other MCT oils, TriPlex MCT-3 is 100% pure and natural. This means that it retains the smell and taste of fresh coconut oil. Other brands of MCT oils are refined and deodorized, and do not have the natural smell or taste of coconut. In addition to this, other brands do not contain lauric acid.
As we mentioned earlier, most MCT oils on the market lose the majority of their lauric acid due to the fractionation process. TriPlex MCT-3 is different. When our oil goes through the process of fractionation, we make sure that enough of the beneficial lauric acid is retained. And since we use CocoTherapy organic coconut oil to make TriPlex MCT-3, you can be sure that it has all the health benefits you've come to expect from our oil.
CocoTherapy TriPlex™ MCT-3 Oil is comprised of 93% medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), and contains an optimal, proprietary blend of the following:
- Caprylic Acid (C:8) 7000mg
- Capric Acid (C: 10) 4700mg
- Lauric Acid (C: 12) 1500mg
So, how does this benefit your pet's health? Let's dive into the science.
The high levels of caprylic acid and capric acid in TriPlex MCT-3 convert to ketones, raising blood ketone levels quickly and efficiently. In addition, lauric acid is then converted to ketones at a slower rate, travelling directly to the brain. It is then converted to ketones by the brain itself, increasing brain ketone levels. For this reason, TriPlex MCT-3 has very pronounced therapeutic effects on brain health.
The caprylic and capric acids in TriPlex MCT-3 oil are rapidly broken down and used as instant energy. This makes the oil highly beneficial for athletic dogs, sporting dogs, show dogs, and any dog that needs an immediate boost of energy. In addition to the caprylic and capric acids, the presence of lauric acid further reduces fatigue. This means that TriPlex MCT-3 is perfect for older dogs or low-energy dogs that need more prolonged energy.
Thanks to its high levels of caprylic acid (a whopping 7000mg!), TriPlex MCT-3 also has powerful antifungal properties. It protects against yeast overgrowth, prevents and treats yeast infections, and kills candida yeast cells on the skin and in the gut. This means that it provides support for your pet's digestive and skin health.
